Dr. Lee Baer’s book

“You are not so abnormal as you think. Every human being is visited from time to time by the Imp of the Perverse, who makes you think the most inappropriate thoughts at the most appropriate times.”

–  Lee Baer, Imp of the Mind

Lee Baer, Ph.D. was a leading clinician in the field of OCD. He wrote the first book to fully examine OCD and the root causes of it, drawing on his clinical work as well as his own experiences– the first historical account of OCD. In Imp of the Mind, he explained “bad thoughts” and the highly sensitive people susceptible to developing OCD in response to their “bad thoughts.” Many people suffering from OCD were able to see that everybody experiences similar socially-unacceptable thoughts, and that the attribution of meaning to the thought contributes to the development of OCD.

He also broke down the differences between exposure response-prevention treatment and cognitive therapy methods. He emphasized the importance of exposure treatments in confronting clients’ worst fears, and brought hope and understanding to a multitude of those suffering and loved ones.
